Geometry of Multi-layer Freeform Structures for Architecture

چکیده
The geometric challenges in the architectural design of freeform shapes come mainly from the physical realization of beams and nodes in singleand multilayer constructions. The present paper approaches arising geometric problems via the concept of parallel meshes. It presents results which form the basis for computation and optimization. We discuss planar faces, beams of controlled height, geometrically optimal nodes, and multilayer constructions. Beams of constant height are achieved with a new type of meshes which possess planar faces and the edge offset property. It turns out that mesh parallelism is also the main ingredient in a novel discrete theory of relative curvatures of meshes with planar faces which can be nicely integrated into the overall framework. The presented methods are applied to the construction of pentagonal and hexagonal meshes, discrete minimal surfaces, discrete constant mean curvature surfaces and geometric transforms of those. It is the aim of the present paper to show two processing pipelines: One for designing geometrically optimal shapes, and another one from an existing design to a feasible meshing and supporting beam layout. Architectural freeform structures from single curved panels
The problem of covering a freeform surface by single curved panels can be treated with the concept of semi-discrete surface representations, which constitute a link between smooth and discrete surfaces. A surface composed from developable strips (called a D-strip model) is the semi-discrete equivalent of a quad mesh with planar faces, or a conjugate parametrization of a smooth surface. Using re...
متن کاملFreeform Honeycomb Structures
Motivated by requirements of freeform architecture, and inspired by the geometry of hexagonal combs in beehives, this paper addresses torsion-free structures aligned with hexagonal meshes. Since repetitive geometry is a very important contribution to the reduction of production costs, we study in detail “honeycomb structures”, which are defined as torsion-free structures where the walls of cell...

متن کاملGeometry and Freeform Architecture
During the last decade, the geometric aspects of freeform architecture have defined a field of applications which is systematically explored and which conversely serves as inspiration for new mathematical research. This paper discusses topics relevant to the realization of freeform skins by various means (flat and curved panels, straight and curved members, masonry, etc.) and illuminates the in...
متن کاملA processing algorithm for freeform fabrication of heterogeneous structures
A processing algorithm for freeform fabrication of heterogeneous structures is presented. The algorithm was developed based on the heterogeneous fabrication structural model, which was constructed from the STL based multi-material volume regions and with material identifications. The reasoning Boolean operation based modelling approach was used to construct the heterogeneous CAD assembly and to...
